You Can’t Do 30-Meter Transects in a Pit Lake: The Archaeological Study of a Mid-Twentieth Century Mine Mid-twentieth-century federal investment in infrastructure projects transformed the American West. Two conspicuous projects impacting the West include the Glen Canyon Dam (1956-1964) and the Interstate Highway System (beginning 1956). Federal investment also found its way into mining in Nevada, specifically the Anaconda Copper Mine in Yerington. These federal investments contributed to the physical transformation accelerated at the end of World War II in the 1950s and 1960s. As these mid-century resources age to 50 years old and older, they challenge standard cultural resource management methods and approaches. This presentation will focus on Nevada’s Anaconda Copper Mine. This example will be used to illustrate how we altered our methods and approaches to adapt to the resource’s federal and legal contexts, landscape-level scale, and safety risks. Presenter: Margo Memmott is an Associate Archaeologist and is Cultural Resources Division Manager at Broadbent & Associates, Inc. in Reno, Nevada. Ms. Memmott graduated with her Master of Arts from the Anthropology Department of the University of Nevada, Reno. She has participated in cultural resource management (CRM) and research projects throughout Nevada. She specializes in historical archaeology and loves getting learning about everyday people from the past through archaeology. Seating is limited. Admission is $10 for adults, members and children age 17 and under are free.
