Proposed in 1860 by Prussian mining engineer Adolph Sutro as a means to prevent flooding in mines and to mine even deeper within Nevada's high desert terrain, the Sutro Tunnel is a 3.88 mile drainage tunnel originating in Dayton, Nevada and connecting with the Comstock Lode in Virginia City. After spending almost 20 years in Nevada working towards his goal of completing the largest drainage adit in the country, Adolph Sutro abruptly left and abandoned his life’s work without any continued input…or, at least, this is what most people thought. Friends of Sutro Tunnel Historic Site Manager, Chris Pattison will explore what was really happening at the Sutro Tunnel, the people that worked in it, the continued success after Adolph left and what the Friends of Sutro Tunnel are doing to restore this significant part of Nevada’s history in his lecture "The Past, Present & Future of the Sutro Tunnel." This lecture will be presented in person and on Zoom. Admission is $10 for adults, members and children age 17 and under are free.
