Frances Humphrey Lecture Series - Adult ages 18 & up

Discover the fascinating history and enduring impact of the Carson City U.S. Mint, a pivotal institution in Nevada’s rich heritage. From its establishment in 1870 to its closure in 1893, the mint produced over 56 million coins, including some of the most sought-after collectibles today. This talk will delve into the mint’s role during the silver boom of the Comstock Lode, highlight notable figures associated with its operations, and explore the lasting legacy of its coinage. Beyond its coin production, the Carson City U.S. Mint significantly influenced Nevada’s economic and social landscape. It provided jobs, supported local businesses, and helped establish Carson City as a vital hub during the late 19th century. The mint’s presence also attracted skilled workers and their families, contributing to the growth and development of the community. Today, the legacy of the Carson City U.S. Mint is preserved and celebrated as part of the Nevada State Museum, which serves as a bridge between the past and present, ensuring that the mint’s valuable heritage continues to inspire and educate future generations. This lecture will be presented in person. Admission is $10 for adults, members and children ages 17 and under are free.
