Frances Humphrey Lecture Series - Adult ages 18 & up

April 4th is the International Day of Mining Awareness. In this spirit, our lecture this month focuses on the efforts to record mining heritage by Dr. Paul White of the Department of Geography at the University of Nevada, Reno. For the last three decades, Dr. White has been recording Alaska’s historic gold mining landscapes, where, like Nevada, remoteness and climatic conditions have left abandoned sites often in a high state of preservation. This talk provides a survey of what can be learned from the jumble of what miners left behind. Dr. White draws upon field drawings, archival records, and oral histories to highlight aspects of the industry that were commonly experienced but seldom directly reported. Dr. White is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Nevada, Reno, and serves as the Chairman of the Nevada State Board on Geographic Names. This lecture will be presented in person. Admission is $10 for adults, members and children ages 17 and under are free.
