Frances Humphrey Lecture Series - Adult ages 18 & up
Place names play a crucial role in shaping cultural identity, preserving history, and fostering a sense of belonging. In Nevada, a state with a rich tapestry of Indigenous heritage, mining history, and rapid urban development, the Nevada State Board on Geographic Names is tasked with the management of place names which presents unique challenges and opportunities. This lecture will highlight some case studies which explain toponymic management policies, illustrate collaborations, conflicts, and insights into managing place names in a way that respects history, promotes inclusivity, and reflects our increasingly diverse communities that call our state home. Dr. Christine Johnson is the Curator of History for the Nevada State Museum in Carson City, and the Executive Secretary for the Nevada State Board on Geographic Names. This lecture will be presented in person. Admission is $10 for adults, members and children ages 17 and under are free.
