Frances Humphrey Lecture Series

"Sensational Women of the American Frontier: From Soiled Dove to Suffragette" by Chris Enss The West was full of promise for women. To succeed they had to fight off Indian raids and endure starvation and the aching sense of being alone in an endless, empty land. But as partners to their menfolk they performed labor worth more than all the West's gold by pressing for schools and churches, law and order. Some women were not satisfied just to be "the Missus"; they sought fulfillment of long-suppressed aspirations. Thousands homesteaded their own land. Thousands kept stretching bounds of a woman's world, vying for jobs normally filled by men and even entering the professions. They demanded the vote and while the East stood aghast, they had, by 1900, won the right in four Western states. Chris Enss is a New York Times best selling author who has been writing about women of the Old West for more than twenty years. She has penned more than forty published books on the subject. Her work has been honored with five Will Rogers Medallion Awards, an Elmer Kelton Book Award, an Oklahoma Center for the Book Award, and was a Western Writers of America Spur Finalist. Her book The Pinks: The First Women Detectives, Operatives, and Spies with the Pinkerton National Detective Agency has been optioned by NBC is currently in development to become a television series. Enss’s most recent works include According to Kate: The Legendary Life of Big Nose Kate Elder, Love of Doc Holliday, No Place for a Woman: The Fight for Suffrage in the Wild West, and Iron Women: The Ladies Who Helped Build the Railroad.
