Frances Humphrey Lecture Series - Adult ages 18 & up

Forgotten Tales of Carson Valley: Love local history? Join author Karen Dustman for a fun dive into Carson Valley’s forgotten past, sharing little-known stories of buried treasure, unsolved murders, stagecoach robberies and more. Presenter: Karen Dustman writes frequently about the history of Carson Valley and Alpine County. She's the author of Forgotten Tales of Carson Valley; four books about local cemeteries; Silver Mountain City: Ghost of the Sierra, a history of Alpine County's original county seat; and a guide to early Markleeville. Karen keeps up an active history blog that’s largely devoted to Sierra history and capturing oral history. She also publishes two free newsletters: one dedicated to historical topics, and the second offering tips for memoir/family-history writers. Find her books, blog, and newsletter sign-ups at: www.Clairitage.com. To attend this lecture in person you must register.

Prior to retiring, I worked 46 years in nursing in med-surg clinical settings, LPN/ADN/BSN education, and as a Family Nurse Practitioner primarily with adults with chronic medical problems, post surgical care and rehabilitation. Serving as a docent, enriches my lifelong interest in people and events that made and make America what it is.

My background is in education in the fields of PE, history, ESL and I retired as a high school librarian. I became a volunteer for the NSM because I wanted to meet new people, learn about Nevada history and then share that history with folks. The Nevada State Museum challenges me and gives me a great deal of satisfaction and a lot of pride in being able to share what the museum has to offer.

Before coming to NSM I volunteered as a docent at the UC Davis Science Center in Incline Village. In addition, I documented research projects, helped with displays, help produce a 3D video about Lake Tahoe and produced a time-lapse video about a wetland restoration project. For 8 years prior to moving to Nevada I was a full time faculty member at an art college in Atlanta where I taught courses in design, including computer graphics and digital photography. And that's only since moving west.
